St Johns (Birchgrove) Homepage

St John's church is located on the east side of Birchgrove Road, set back from the road in its own grounds with a church hall beside it. It was built in Perpendicular style in 1890-1 as a daughter church in the parish of Llansamlet. to designs of J.Birch Padden. It consists of nave and chancel, north-east vestry, and tower with entrance at west gable. The church was extended by two bays in 1930. Fittings include a font in the form of a tiny bowl on a thick baluster stem, dated 1829. Stained glass includes work by Heaton, Butler & Bayne (1930). Source: John Newman, Buildings of Wales: Glamorgan (1995), p.154. RCAHMW, 21 April 2015 The churchyard to the South of the church was developed in 2020 with the creation of four two-bedroom bungalows. The homes were built as part of the Faith in Affordable Housing (FiAH) project, which in this instance was a partnership of Housing Justice Cymru, the Church in Wales and housing provider Pobl Group, that sees surplus land being used for affordable housing. FiAH is managed by Housing Justice Cymru and was set up to encourage churches of all denominations to release surplus land and buildings for affordable housing. Initially, three of the homes were let by Pobl, with the fourth being developed and funded by the parish through proceeds from the land sale and additional funding. The fourth house has since been sold to Pobl, with the proceeds being used to reorder and refurbish the church.
